20 Healthiest Diet Foods for You ...

By Lyndsie

Healthy Diet Food is naturally important when you want to lose weight – but it doesn't have to taste bad. On the contrary, lots of healthy diet food is quite tasty, so much so that you won't even really feel like you're on a diet. Eating the right foods is as important as exercise when you want to lose weight, though, so never underestimate the importance of having a nutritional balanced diet – and do go into it thinking nothing will taste good! Just take a look at the delicious healthy diet food on this list and get ready to go shopping!

1 Apricots

Apricots are not only a healthy diet food, they're absolutely delicious! They have tons of beta-carotene, which fights against free radicals and can even protect your vision. You also get lots of vitamin A from apricots, and one of them only has 17 calories, so eat them fresh or dried!

2 Eggs

Eggs have gotten rotten rap – pardon the pun. But really, they're not as bad for you as they're made out to be. They're actually quite essential, because they have lots of nutrients it's hard to find anywhere else. They've got lots of antioxidants, they're rich in choline, and they're delicious!

3 Salmon

When you're on a diet, fish is the word and salmon is probably your best choice. It has lots of vitamin D and omega-3s, so it has tons of benefits. For instance, it can prevent heart disease, make your skin smooth and supple, and even help you lose weight!

4 Onions

Onions might be smelly, but they're still a really healthy diet food! They contain quercetin, a powerful, naturally occurring plant antioxidant known as a flavonoid. A cup of onions only has 61 calories, and they taste fantastic in a ton of recipes.

5 Lentils

Lentils are an essential part of any diet as well. They have isoflavones and fiber, so they make your heart healthier. They've got plenty of protein as well, and when you're dieting, you need your protein.

6 Crab

Crab, believe it or not, is a great food to eat when you're dieting. Good news for me, I love the stuff! It's got plenty of B12 and zinc, so it helps your immune system as well. A 3 ounce portion of crab only has about 84 calories and just one gram of fat!

7 Greek Yogurt

It's important to get enough calcium when you're on a diet. Eating Greek yogurt is a great way to do that. It, too, benefits your immune system, has lots of healthy bacteria, two times more protein than regular yogurt, and it tastes delicious.

8 Lean Beef

You might not consider beef a healthy diet food, but I promise it is. If you're not a vegan or vegetarian, then it's important to get the iron provided by lean cuts of beef. You don't want to eat it too often and you have to be careful about the cut, but beef is an essential part of any diet, so enjoy!

9 Pinto Beans

Although beans have some less than desirable side effects, they're still great for dieting! They've got lots of folate and help prevent heart disease, and all that fiber will help keep things … you know, regular! Just try not to eat them on date night, that's all.

10 Squash

Squash is one of my favorite vegetables, and if you're on a diet, it should become one of yours, too. Whether it's acorn squash, pumpkin, or butternut squash, it's all good for you. With plenty of beta-carotene and vitamin C, its delicious – and versatile. It can be savory or sweet, so start experimenting!

11 Tofu and Edamame

Soy foods are so beneficial, especially when you're dieting. They help prevent heart disease, you can use them to replace cheeses and meats with lots of fat, they have the polyunsaturated fats you need, essential vitamins, and lots of fiber. What could be better?

12 Avocado

Avocado is more than just a healthy diet food, it's a super food! Avocado is chock full of MUFAs (monounsaturated fats) and nutrients, and it's a great substitute for many unhealthy, fatty foods. It's got potassium, folate, fiber, and vitamin E, so you can't go wrong – as long as you use moderation. Avocados still contain a lot of calories, but if you don't go overboard and use them as a substitute for mayonnaise or cheese, you're good to go.

13 Fat Free Milk

Like say, you still need calcium. You can get it by choosing fat free milk instead of one or two percent. Skim is a good choice as well. Milk fights fat, you see, so it's a must-have when you're trying to lose weight by incorporating a healthier diet.

14 Nuts

Tree nuts are so good for you! Walnuts have omega-3s, almonds have tons of polyphenols, and hazelnuts have the essential amino acid arginine. Again, though, you have to moderate your intake, but as a snack or an addition to salad, stir fry, cereal, and yogurt, they're great!

15 Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a delicious, nutritious addition to your daily diet. It's an important heart healthy food, and so filling. It can even help prevent diabetes, and it has plenty of fiber. It's not just a breakfast food either, but can be used to coat skinless chicken or fish.

16 Olive Oil

Believe it or not, olive oil is also a healthy diet food. It has plenty of MUFAs too, and can lower your bad cholesterol levels while improving your good levels. It has lots of antioxidants, and it's delicious! Honestly, try drizzling it over your asparagus before sauteing, you'll fall in love.

17 Broccoli

Broccoli is another great super food, and it fights against so many diseases! By adding broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower to your diet, you lower your risk of heart disease and cancer. It's best steamed, but don't worry, it's still tasty!

18 Garlic

Something else you might not want to eat on date night, but it's still important – and so flavorful! By working garlic into your diet – and to nearly any meal – you'll reap plenty of benefits. If you crush the cloves and then let them stand up for half an hour, they'll protect your heart even more!

19 Spinach

Raw or cooked, spinach is a great food for dieting. It improves the muscles in your heart and your body! It has lots of iron too, and plenty of the B vitamin folate. It actually is better cooked than raw, so feel free to buy it frozen!

20 Blueberries

This super fruit is definitely a healthy diet food. All those antioxidants are so good for you! Eat these as a snack, add them to cereal or yogurt, just make sure you get plenty!

See? Healthy diet food isn't all about cottage cheese and peaches (a combo I personally find detestable, yech!) or “rabbit food.” There are lots of really scrumptious choices out there, and they all help make eating right easier. Healthy diet food gets a bad reputation, but if you're willing to give it a try, I promise you'll be surprised. Did your favorite healthy diet food make the list? If not, tell us what you like best!
